There is a constant pressure to earn more money because, in our society, this equates to power and success, which gives us the illusion of happiness and self-worth. This chasing of power and money can leave some of us exhausted and dissatisfied. Though money gives us comfort, security and freedom, it does not have to be all consuming of us. How much is enough is a difficult question to answer, the more we have, the more we want. But we can decide to be happy and content with what we have and that can give us a sense of relief. Here are a few thoughts on how we can make our life meaningful without having to worry about our finances.
- Financial Literacy – Money is necessary to lead a basic life and secure your future, so while you are working and earning, try to improve your financial literacy that will enable you to make informed decisions about money.
- Save Smart – Once you have improved your financial literacy, you can invest your savings wisely that will give you good returns and enable you to have a secured future and can eliminate the worry of future to some extent. You should create a robust system where you are tracking your earnings, expenses and savings.
- Identify expenses that are unnecessary – Cut down on expenses that are absolutely not needed. Like subscriptions to magazines or channels that you don’t really read or watch, reducing the frequency of eating out often at a fine dining restaurant, avoid random shopping or sale shopping just because the item is being offered for much lesser than its actual price and so on
- Stop Impressing or showing love with money – A kind and thoughtful gesture goes a long way than an expensive gift. That being said, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give anything, what it means is that the thought behind the gift matters and not the price tag.
- Buy Insurance – The need for money becomes essential when it comes to medical treatment, it doesn’t come cheap. Get yourself and your family covered with a good life and medical insurance, which will help you in time of medical distress.
- Stop comparing – Life would be simpler if there was nothing to measure your success with. Don’t compare your success and happiness by the means of other’s. Not everyone walks in the same shoes. You have to ask yourself what makes you happy and while asking yourself, do not compare it to other’s happiness. The moment you stop looking at others and start looking into your life, it will be much more happier and peaceful and you can be content.
- Acceptance – Realising the fact that you cannot control everything in life and accepting that, will give you a sense of freedom and peace.
- Find your purpose – Giving back to the community, society or nature can give you a sense of purpose and meaning. Once you identify what it is that you want to make a difference in and start investing your time in it, it will give you a sense of satisfaction. This can be different to each individual and you should find your purpose and start working on it.
